About

Jikiden Reiki

Jikiden translates to"direct teachings" and refers to Reiki directly taught by Chujiro Hayashi Sensei to Chiyoko Yamaguchi.

Jikiden Reiki does not involve any modern influences or changes from how it was originally taught by Dr Hayashi- one of Master Usui's most prominent teachers. Dr Hayashi was fundamental in spreading Reiki, initiating 13 Masters before his passing in 1940, one of them being Hawayo Takata who we thank for bringing Reiki in the West. As Reiki continued to evolve and spread in the West, many were unaware that Reiki was still being quietly practice behind closed doors in Japan. In the late 1990's through chance encounters one of these original practitioners was discovered- Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921-2003).

In 1938 at the age of 17 Chiyoko Sensei was initiated into Reiki by Dr Hayashi. She became a dedicated practitioner alongside other members of her family including her siblings and uncle Wasaburo Sugano who she is also learnt with. Sugano was one of Dr Hayashi dedicated teachers and a pivotal figure in helping to spread Reiki outside of Osaka, regularly organizing and hosting workshops together with Dr Hayashi in Osaka and his home town of Ishikawa.

In 1999 after many requests and noticing how different the original teachings have evolved since she was first taught, she and her son Tadao Yamaguchi established The Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai to publicly share for the first time her direct Reiki knowledge and experience as practiced and taught to her and her family in the 1920-30s. Chiyoko Sensei continued to practice Reiki throughout her life for the next 65 years till her passing in 2003 at the age of 81.

History

Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned Reiki directly from Dr Hayashi Chujiro one of Mikao Usui's original Teachers. The method passed on is "Usui Reiki therapy for improving the mind and body" that was founded and practiced in Japan where it originated from.

The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is currently the only other known group that practices in this traditional way in Japan, however this society has remained secretive and largely unknown until today. Many more practitioners likely still exist in Japan and practice behind close doors.

Jikiden Reiki aims to pass on traditional Reiki without any external influences, as taught and passed on by:

Mikao Usui- Dr Hayashi- Chiyoko Yamaguchi-Tadao Yamaguchi.

Western & Japanese Reiki

Although Reiki originated in Japan, most of the Reiki practiced in the mainstream today in both Japan and the West originate from the lineage of Hawayo Takata or what is commonly referred to as Western Reiki. All systems lead back to the one great source of Reiki. We focus on what unifies them all rather then the differences. We teach Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki yet Gar's practice and teaching approach is strongly rooted in both systems. We aim to share both streams of knowledge and pass on Reiki to the best of our understanding. Each system has it's own perspective and approach resulting in its own unique benefits. In order to share Reiki as authentically as we can we believe it is important to understand both perspectives and how this beautiful system has naturally evolved over time.

(1900-1980)

Chiyoko Yamaguchi and Hawayo Takata both learnt directly with Dr Chujiro Hayashi. Chiyoko and her family continued to practice Reiki daily in Japan, whilst Takata helped bring Reiki to the West and was instrumental in spreading it to the rest of the world.

Kyoto Travels

Jikiden Institute, Kyoto Japan- April 2024

Receiving Shoden & Okuden Level from Tadao Sensei and visiting sacred Mount Kurama where Master Usui discovered his connection with Reiki!

In April 2024 Gar traveled to Kyoto, Japan to further her own Reiki practice and knowledge from a more traditional aspect. She is an Okuden Jikiden Reiki practitioner and has trained with Tadao Yamaguchi. Tadao Sensei continues to pass on Reiki as originally taught by his late mother Chiyoko Yamaguchi. Having first made contact in 2019, this has been a long awaited journey. It was a great opportunity to become a student once again, resulting in a beautiful time filled with much learning and unlearning! New discoveries of lost traditional aspects and practices, yet most importantly a renewed gratitude and appreciation of the simplicity and effectiveness of Reiki in its purest essence.

Gar currently teaches the system of Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki. Her teaching approach and perspectives are an integration of both her knowledge and understanding of both systems so students can have a deeper and more balanced understanding of Reiki from both a traditional and Western point of view.
